Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has confirmed that he had abstained from voting on opening negotiations with Ukraine on accession to the European Union, adding that his stance on the issue remains unchanged.

Details: Orbán once again reaffirmed that Hungary thinks “Ukraine is not prepared for opening negotiations on EU membership”.

“The decision to start negotiations with Ukraine under such circumstances is absolutely insane, irrational and wrong,” he added.

Orbán explained that after nearly eight hours of discussions, other EU member states insisted on supporting opening accession talks with Ukraine and, as he put it, “decided to have their way”.

“Hungary does not want to be part of this very bad decision,” Orbán also said when explaining why he abstained from the vote.

Previously: During a summit in Brussels, European Union leaders approved the European Commission’s recommendation to open accession talks with Ukraine and Moldova.
