Details: Since 1 October 2022, the State Employment Service has issued 81,269 referrals for community service, most of them in Kharkiv Oblast (16,122 referrals).

The oblasts with the highest number of unemployed people involved are Donetsk (10,301 referrals), Poltava (9,861), Kyiv (9,795) and Chernihiv (8,959). In total, 19 oblasts have been involved in the project.

UAH 549 million (about US$14 million) has been allocated to pay salaries for participating in the project.

Types of community service work depend on the needs of each oblast. Local authorities determine what services are needed in the region, inform the Employment Service about them, and the latter suggests the unemployed registered in the database join such work. These people sign a fixed-term employment contract for the duration of the work.

They are paid according to the number of hours worked, and earn at least UAH 10,650 (about US$280) if they worked a full month. From 1 April 2024, the salary will increase to UAH 12,000 (about US$315).

Background: More women started holding offices previously held by men during Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
