Details: The Pentagon reported that the US allocated the US$200 million package through the mechanism of the presidential drawdown authority, meaning that the armament is being transferred directly from the storages of the US army.

In addition to this, the US Defense Department announced the allocation of about US$1.5 billion within the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI) which provides for signing long-term contracts with armament manufacturers.

Both packages contain ammunition for HIMARS and NASAMS systems, as well as short- and medium-range air defence munitions, RIM-7 missiles for air defence, 155mm and 105mm artillery rounds, 120mm mortar rounds, and precision aerial munitions.

The list also contains Javelin and AT-4 anti-armor systems, anti-tank TOW guided missiles, radio-electronic warfare equipment, small arms, explosives, secure communications systems, commercial satellite imagery services and spare parts.

“This is the Biden Administration’s twentieth USAI package and sixty-second tranche of equipment to be provided from DoD inventories for Ukraine and since August 2021,” the Pentagon noted.

Background:

  • The latest US$225 million military aid package was announced on 11 July. The package included one Patriot air defence system.
  • Recently The Pentagon has found errors in its accounting calculations, which have allowed it to allocate additional US$2 billion for weapons for Ukraine.
