Poland and Baltic States propose EU to ban Russian LNG imports

Pravda Ukraine

Poland and the Baltic States propose to include a ban on imports of Russian liquefied natural gas and aluminium in the new EU sanctions, as well as measures to make it more difficult to circumvent sanctions.

This was reported by the Polish news outlet RMF24.

The outlet, citing its own sources, notes that in addition to the ban on imports of liquefied natural gas and aluminium from Russia, the proposal made by Poland and the Baltic States includes a number of other solutions designed to hinder Moscow’s economic and technological development.

Accordingly, the new EU sanctions may include a ban on scientific cooperation and research funding for Russia, further measures to combat Moscow’s circumvention of sanctions, tighter sanctions in the aviation sector, and expanding the list of banned unmanned aerial vehicles.

Poland and the Baltic States also advocate for sectoral sanctions pressure on Belarus. They believe this will help prevent Russia from using Belarus to circumvent EU sanctions.

It is added that the proposals will be included in the negotiations on the 13th package of EU sanctions against Russia. The package is scheduled to be approved on 24 February 2024.

Background:

  • The European Union is going to impose an embargo on Russian aluminium as part of the 13th package of sanctions.
  • Novatek, Russia’s largest liquefied natural gas producer, has notified some of its customers of force majeure circumstances regarding future deliveries under the Arctic LNG 2 project.
