The protesters’ leader, Roman Kondrów, said they will allow three lorries per hour to pass, while the protest is expected to continue until 3 February.

Polish farmers are demanding government subsidies for corn, liquid loans for farmers, and the retention of the agricultural tax at last year’s level.

On 3 January, the Polish farmers’ association Oszukana Wieś (Deceived Village) announced they would resume their blockade of the Medyka-Shehyni checkpoint on the Ukrainian border.

“We have not received written confirmation that our demands will be met, so we are continuing our protest,” Kondrów said.

Earlier, the Minister of Agriculture of Poland, Czeslaw Sekerski, visited Medyka and assured the farmers’ demands would be met. However, Kondrów said that he had not received any written assurances.

Background:

  • Farmers from the Oszukana Wieś (Deceived Village) organisation began blocking the Medyka border checkpoint on 23 November 2023.
  • They then announced that they would be suspending their protest from 24 December until early January and might not resume it if their demands were met.
  • Representatives of Poland’s Ministry of Infrastructure and Ukraine’s Ministry of Development of Communities, Territories and Infrastructure agreed on an action plan to unblock the border at a meeting in Kyiv on 22 December.
