Quote: “We have not received written confirmation that our demands will be met, so we are continuing our protest.”

Background:

  • Polish Agriculture Minister Czesław Siekierski visited Medyka yesterday and assured the farmers that their demands would be met. However, Kondrów said he had not received an assurance in writing.
  • Kondrów has vowed that the protest will be tougher this time – only one lorry per hour will be allowed through.
  • The Polish farmers are demanding that the government provide subsidies for maize and liquidity loans for farmers and keep the agricultural tax at last year’s level.
  • Farmers from Oszukana Wieś began blocking the Medyka border crossing on 23 November this year.
  • On 24 December, they announced that they were suspending their protest until early January and might not resume it if their demands were met.
  • At the end of December, the governments of Ukraine and Poland agreed on an action plan for unblocking the border.
