Details: Tusk tweeted: “The rumours about your visit to Moscow cannot be true, Viktor Orbán, or can they?”

European Council President Charles Michel responded to media reports about Orbán’s planned visit to Russia on Friday, saying that Hungary, which holds the EU Council presidency, has no mandate to engage with Russia on behalf of the EU.

VSquare and Direkt36 journalist Szabolcs Panyi, who covers Central and Eastern Europe, reported earlier, citing sources, that Orbán will visit Moscow just days after travelling to Kyiv for an official visit.

The information has also been confirmed by Radio Liberty sources. The Hungarian government has not yet commented or officially confirmed the visit.

An EU official who wished to remain anonymous told Radio Liberty that Orbán had not informed the EU of his visit to Moscow. Had Orbán asked, Charles Michel would have strongly advised against such a visit, the official said.

On Tuesday, during his visit to Kyiv, Orbán suggested that Ukraine agree to a ceasefire, which would be beneficial to Russia. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy rejected the idea.

On Monday, Hungary took up its six-month EU presidency, and this has created an opportunity for Orbán to raise his diplomatic profile.
