Details: While Duda emphasised that NATO membership is the most effective security guarantee for Ukraine, he acknowledged that full membership is not possible while hostilities continue in the country. However, he argued that an invitation to Ukraine could be extended now.
Quote: “Since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion, I have persistently called on NATO countries to extend an invitation to Ukraine. This would be the first step towards providing real security guarantees by the members of the North Atlantic Alliance.”
More details: Duda also stated that an increasing number of NATO leaders are leaning towards inviting Ukraine into the alliance.
Following his meeting with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk on 15 January, Zelenskyy stated that EU and NATO membership, significant military aid packages, support for Ukraine’s forces, and the possible deployment of foreign military contingents in Ukraine could all serve as effective security guarantees.
Background: In an interview with European Pravda, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha asserted that Ukraine considers joining NATO to be the single most effective guarantee of security for itself.
