Putin claims he will continue his assault on Ukraine

Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that he will not abandon the so-called goals of the war against Ukraine.

Quote: “The West is not abandoning its strategy of deterring Russia, nor abandoning its aggressive goals against Ukraine. Well, we will not abandon our goals of the special military operation [as the war against Ukraine is called in Russia – ed.] either.”

Details: Putin complained that the West was “giving the enemy real-time intelligence, weapons” and waging a hybrid war against Russia.

Background:

  • To justify the full-scale invasion of Ukrainian territory in February 2022, the Kremlin claimed the task of “denazification and demilitarisation” of Ukraine.
  • In particular, on 24 February 2022, Putin stated: “I have decided to conduct a special military operation. Its purpose is to protect people who have been subjected to genocide by the Kyiv regime for 8 years. And for this, we will strive for the demilitarisation and denazification of Ukraine.”
  • In February 2022, Putin’s Press Secretary Lavrov stated that “ideally, Ukraine should be liberated, cleansed of the Nazis,” and then stated in March 2022 that “the special operation is designed to end any war that could be taking place on Ukrainian territory.”
  • After that, the conditional “goals of the special military operation” changed even more in the rhetoric of the occupiers.
  • In particular, in June 2023, Putin made a controversial statement about the goals of Russia’s attack on Ukraine: they both change and do not change at the same time. In August of this year, the self-proclaimed president of Belarus, Aleksandr Lukashenko, stated that the goals of the war against Ukraine had already been achieved.
