Details: Putin reportedly called a meeting of the Russian Security Council on 20 January, where he and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov confirmed Russia’s readiness for peace talks with the new administration of US President Donald Trump.

Putin stressed that any peaceful settlement should be based on “eliminating the root causes” of the conflict, which, in his words, includes meeting Russia’s tough demands.

Quote: “Senior Kremlin officials, including Putin and Lavrov, have been reiterating in recent weeks that the Kremlin refuses to consider any compromises to Putin’s late 2021 and early 2022 demands, which include demands that Ukraine remain permanently “neutral” and not join NATO, impose severe limitations on the size of the Ukrainian military, and remove the current Ukrainian government.”

Details: Putin also said that then-US President Joe Biden proposed in 2021 to postpone Ukraine’s accession to NATO for 10-15 years, but even this did not prevent a Russian invasion, which he said was “alleged threats from NATO expansion”.
