Putin urges Ukraine to surrender rather than negotiate, US vice president says

US Vice President Kamala Harris has stressed the need to preserve the rules-based international order, which Russia has shaken with its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Details: In her speech, Harris stressed that Russia’s actions, if left unchallenged, “will encourage other aggressors and lead to the possibility of wars of conquest and chaos, rather than order and stability, threatening the entire world.”
The vice president stated that the United States will continue to support Ukraine and make Russia pay and will work to achieve a just and lasting peace, adding that “nothing about ending this war is resolved without Ukraine”.
“In contrast, [Russian ruler Vladimir] Putin put forward a proposal yesterday. However, we must be frank: he is not calling for negotiations, he is calling for surrender. The United States is supporting Ukraine not out of charity but because it is in our strategic interest,” Harris said.
Background:
- The two-day Global Peace Summit in Switzerland, which will take place from 15 to 16 June, has commenced. The programme includes a plenary session and discussions on three points of Ukraine’s Peace Formula: nuclear security, food security, and the humanitarian aspect.
- The summit is expected to result in a declaration available for accession to all states.
