Congress must act to ensure that the United States can continue to provide military assistance to Ukraine, State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said, but it is already clear that Russia has failed.

Quote from Miller: “I will say that we do need Congress to act. We are out of funding here. We know that we need to continue to support Ukraine. They need – they rely on this assistance. They rely on it to continue to fight what is a brutal Russian assault that continues, even over the – that continues every day. And so it’s important for Congress to act to continue to fund this democracy that is continuing to defend itself”.

According to Miller, it is quite clear that Russia has failed, and the White House’s assessment is that the Russians cannot take over Kyiv. Putin has not achieved and will not be able to achieve his ultimate goal, which is to conquer the whole of Ukraine.

“We’ve looked at Ukraine’s performance and Ukraine’s – not only their performance on the battlefield but the way that they’ve been able to build their economy and the reforms that they have taken – more needs to be done on all of those fronts, of course – and the way that they have rallied support not just from the United States but from all of Europe, and the way that they continue to fight very bravely against the Russian army”, Miller said.

Details: The State Department spokesperson does not believe that the war in Ukraine is currently shaping up to be in Russia’s favour. Miller reminded that people often forget what Vladimir Putin’s real goal was: the total conquest of Ukraine, the removal of the Ukrainian government from power and the incorporation of Ukraine into Russia. Therefore, according to the State Department spokesperson, it is important to remember what Ukraine has achieved and continues to achieve.

According to him, Ukraine was able to prevent this from happening. “Now everyone takes it for granted, but it didn’t look like a done deal at the beginning of the war”, he stressed.

Matthew Miller reminded that last summer Russia withdrew from the Black Sea Grain Initiative, and it seemed that Ukraine would not be able to continue exporting grain. At the same time, Ukraine had military successes and opened part of the Black Sea to merchant ships.
