Russian opposition media have found out that Russia is already mustering people to attend a concert to be held on 18 March in honour of Vladimir Putin’s “victory” in the so-called presidential election.

Details: Novaya Gazeta Europe discovered that Anastasia Borisova, the head of the Moscow Student Volunteer Centre, created a special chat for the “VIP fan zone” of a rally in Red Square. Officially, the event will be marking the anniversary of the annexation of Crimea.

In order to be admitted, prospective attendees were asked to enter their ID information to be checked by the Federal Security Service (FSB), as Vladimir Putin was said to be expected to attend.

When a member of the chat group remarked that the event is due to be held after the election, the organisers edited the message, replacing Putin’s name with “the president”. Users have now been banned from sending messages in the chat.

According to Borisova, the Russian bands and singers set to perform at the rally include Lyube, Grigory Leps, Stas Mikhailov and Valeriya, and probably SHAMAN too.

It is also reported that tickets for the 18 March concert are being distributed among university students, who are promised merch and a day off from their studies in exchange for attending.

Background:

  • The so-called Russian presidential elections, which are expected to be nothing more than Putin’s reelection for another term, will be held on 15-17 March.
