Russia claims Ukrainian drones attack TurkStream gas pipeline

Pravda Ukraine

The Russian Ministry of Defence reported that on 11 January, the Ukrainian military allegedly attacked the infrastructure of the Ruska compressor station in the village of Gaikodzor, Russiaʼs Krasnodar Krai, using drones. This station supplies gas through the TurkStream pipeline to European countries.

Details: The ministry claims that the attack was carried out using nine drones, all of which were shot down by air defence forces. However, the wreckage of one of the drones caused minor damage to the building and equipment of the gas metering station located on the territory of the Ruska compressor station.

No staff were injured, and no serious damage to infrastructure was recorded.

Representatives of Russian gas giant Gazprom claim that the compressor station is operating normally, and gas supplies through the TurkStream pipeline are carried out without interruption or disruption.

Background:

  • The contract between Ukraine and Russia on gas transit to Europe expired at the end of 2024 after the Ukrainian side decided not to renew it.
  • Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico criticised Kyiv for doing so and wrote a letter to EU leaders expressing his dissatisfaction with Ukraine’s actions.
  • He also threatened to retaliate by cutting off electricity supplies to Kyiv or reducing assistance to Ukrainian refugees in Slovakia.
  • On 9 January, Fico expanded the range of his threats against Ukraine over Kyiv’s suspension of Russian natural gas transit.
  • On 10 January, Fico said that Kremlin leader Putin had promised him that Russia’s Gazprom would find alternative ways to supply contracted gas to Slovakia after the transit through Ukraine was stopped.
