Young foreign women were promised free flights, financial assistance, and internships in Europe through advertisements on social media, provided they passed a Russian language proficiency test.
However, upon arriving in Tatarstan [a republic of Russia – ed.], the women discovered that their work would involve assembling Shahed drones for the war against Ukraine.
Some female workers have complained about long working hours, low wages, and strict supervision. They also face harmful chemicals that cause skin irritation.
Reports indicate that the Kremlin is actively recruiting women from African and Asian countries to address the labour shortage amid the war.
Approximately 200 African women are working alongside Russian vocational school students, who are generally aged 16-18, in drone production in Tatarstan.
