Russia has been making slow but steady advances at the front in Ukraine in recent weeks, but that advance comes at a cost to its occupying forces, US officials claim.

Details: According to US officials, September was the “bloodiest” month of the full-scale war in Ukraine.

Losses from offensive operations in Donbas resulted in a total of over 600,000 dead and wounded Russians, according to authorities who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

The American estimate of Russian losses is consistent with prior Ukrainian figures.

According to one of the authorities, the Russian occupation army’s steady and brutal march pushes it closer to the city of Pokrovsk, Donbas, a crucial transportation hub for Ukrainian troops. Its loss would be a significant setback to Ukrainian forces.

This summer, Russian offensive operations included massive artillery strikes followed by large troop transfers to well-fortified Ukrainian positions, resulting in thousands of casualties, as the Russian command appears to have chosen a strategy of “trading bodies for ground,” according to the publication.

The recent Russian victories are the most substantial since the beginning of the invasion in February 2022, and Moscow appears to be counting on the level of casualties remaining high, at least in the immediate term.

“If you look at the salient around Pokrovsk the number of Russian forces there is astounding. It’s tens of thousands of forces that they’ve put into that very small area. As you know, when you have that many forces in a very small area … it’s a target rich environment for the Ukrainians,” the US official said.

Earlier, it was reported that UK Defence Intelligence reported a new record for the average daily losses of Russian forces in Ukraine in September 2024, marking the highest figures recorded since the start of the full-scale invasion.

UK Defence Intelligence forecasts that after the capture of the city of Vuhledar in Donetsk Oblast by the Russians, their next target will be the settlement of Velyka Novosilka in Zaporizhzhia Oblast.
