Quote from Zelenskyy: “In less than a month, Russia failed three elections to international bodies for the first time in history. This is the logical result of Russia’s actions: its role in international affairs keeps diminishing and its isolation keeps growing.”

Details: Zelenskyy also said Ukraine, Poland and Lithuania have been elected to the OPCW’s Executive Council for the period 2024-2026.

“I am grateful to all of the countries that supported our candidacies and voted Russia out,” the president said.

Serhii Kyslytsia, Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the UN, tweeted the results of the ballot, in which Ukraine received 126 votes, Lithuania 76, Poland 123, and Russia just 65.

Reporting the results of the ballot, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis said it was time for all international organisations to clean up their act in order to maintain their relevance and credibility.

Background:

  • Russia failed to be elected to the Executive Council of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) for the first time.
  • Prior to that, a Russian representative was not elected to the International Court of the UN, losing out to Romania’s representative, former Foreign Minister Bogdan Aurescu.
