Details: It is noted that in recent weeks, the Naval Aviation component has begun to play a particularly significant role in the operations of the Black Sea Fleet. In particular, aircraft are patrolling from the air to detect uncrewed surface vessels (USVs) at an early stage.

The Be-12 MAIL amphibious aircraft, which operates from bases in occupied Crimea, plays a key role for the Russians in these operations.

At the same time, Su-24 fighter jets (FENCER and FLANKER according to NATO codification) are engaged in strike operations, with at least one recent airstrike on the strategically-located Zmiinyi (Snake) Island.

Quote: “With more Fleet activities likely relocating to Novorossiysk in the face of threats to Sevastopol, Russia is attempting to use naval air power to project force over the north-western Black Sea.”

Background:

  • On 26 September, UK Defence Intelligence reported that the Russian Black Sea Fleet would likely not be able to have the same control in the Black Sea waters as before and would also feel less safe in its ports after the latest series of successful Ukrainian strikes.
  • Meanwhile, Daniel Petrescu, Romania’s Chief of the General Staff, has said Russia is actively and constantly jamming GPS communications of ships in Romanian territorial waters, which causes a risk of collisions.
