Russia threatens South Korea amid arrival of DPRK military – Russian media

Russia’s Foreign Ministry has threatened South Korea with “security consequences” if it helps Ukraine in its war against Russia.
Source: Russian news agency Interfax, citing a statement by Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova at a briefing on Wednesday
Quote: “We believe that the South Korean authorities should not be playing along with the Kyiv regime.”
Details: Zakharova warned the Republic of Korea “of the consequences for South Korea’s security that could result from the Republic of Korea’s involvement in the Ukrainian conflict, if such decisions are made”.
Quote: “The Russian Federation will indeed react harshly to any steps that may pose a threat to the security of the country, its citizens, wherever its citizens are. These measures can be quite tangible.”
Background:
- NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said that South Korea would send experts to the Alliance to provide details about the North Korean military’s involvement in Russia’s war against Ukraine.
- On 18 October, South Korea’s National Intelligence Service (NIS) reported that North Korea has sent 1,500 special forces troops to help Russia’s war efforts in Ukraine. They are likely to be deployed to participate in combat against Ukraine.
- Kyrylo Budanov, Chief of Defence Intelligence of Ukraine, confirmed that approximately 11,000 North Korean infantry troops are currently being trained in Russia’s east. They are expected to be ready for combat against Ukraine by 1 November.
