Details: Popov was detained in relation to a case of “fraud on a particularly large scale”.

On 17 May 2024, Popov was sentenced to two months in custody as a preventive measure, the press service of the 235th Garrison Military Court confirmed to RBC.

In July 2023, Popov, in an audio address to his subordinates and the military, said that he had a “difficult situation with his senior officers”. He said he “laid out all the issues” that existed in the Russian army, including the lack of counter-battery weapons and artillery reconnaissance bases, as well as “mass deaths and casualties” among Russian soldiers.

Popov said he was dismissed a day after delivering his report. Andrei Gurulyov, a State Duma deputy and former 58th Army commander, shared Popov’s address online. The Russian Defence Ministry has not officially commented on this information.

During the war in Ukraine, Popov had been the commander of the 58th Combined Arms Army, which fought on the Zaporizhzhia front.
