German Chancellor Olaf Scholz does not believe that incoming US President Donald Trump will cancel all aid to Ukraine after taking office but added that it would be good to see what the situation will be like in the long term.

Details: Scholz stressed that he does not expect an immediate cessation of US aid to Ukraine after Trump’s inauguration.

Quote: “I do not expect an immediate collapse in US support for Ukraine in the near future,” he said, adding that it remains to be seen what the situation will be “in the long term”.

The German chancellor explained that his assessment is linked to Trump’s intention to reach an understanding and resolution of the conflict in the near future and discuss it with Vladimir Putin.

He warned, however, that such a solution to the war should not be implemented “over the heads of Ukrainians and Europe”.

Background:

  • During his election campaign, Donald Trump promised to end the war in Ukraine before his inauguration. He also promised to end the war within 24 hours of taking office.
  • Recently, Trump’s team acknowledged that this task is much more difficult and could take months to complete.
  • At his pre-inauguration rally in Washington, Trump once again promised to end the war in Ukraine and prevent World War III.
