The Security Service of Ukraine has uncovered a prisoner who, on orders from the Russian FSB, was forming a “support group” from other inmates to facilitate the breakthrough of Russian sabotage and reconnaissance groups into Kharkiv.

Details: The investigation found out that the prisoner was recruited by the FSB while serving a sentence in the temporarily occupied part of Luhansk since 2012. Before Russia’s full-scale invasion, he was transferred to a correctional facility in Kharkiv Oblast as a resident of the territory controlled by Ukraine.

It is reported that under the direction of Russian intelligence, the man recruited other inmates who were nearing the end of their sentences. Upon release, they were to disperse throughout Kharkiv and nearby border villages to establish the geolocations of Ukrainian checkpoints and fortifications.

Additionally, the Russians wanted to obtain coordinates of key infrastructure facilities from their informants, along with latest reports on the security systems of these facilities.

Investigation materials indicate that the Russians needed this intelligence to prepare sabotage raids in the frontline areas of the oblast, bypassing Ukrainian military defensive lines.

However, the Security Service thwarted the Russians’ plans and exposed the agent. Law enforcement officials have served the Russian agent with a notice of suspicion of state treason.
