Shahed drones attack on 25 November: Kyiv UGCC Patriarchal Cathedral is damaged

During the large-scale Shahed drones attack on Kyiv on the night of 25 November, the Patriarchal Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) was damaged.

Details: During the attack, one of the Shahed UAVs was shot down in the Dnipro district of Kyiv city, near the Patriarchal Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ and the residence of UGCC head. The blast wave damaged the doors and smashed windows in the cathedral. A multi-storey building near the church suffered more damage.
“As a result of the drone attack on Kyiv, six windows in the basement of the Patriarchal Cathedral were damaged. The blast wave knocked out the double-glazed windows. The fittings on four doors of the church were damaged, and the door locks were pretty much torn out,” said Vasyl Bukatiuk, director of the Construction Directorate under the Patriarch of the UGCC.
In addition to the church building, he said, the residence of the head of the church was also damaged: “The fittings of three doors in the Patriarchal Residence and the Patriarchal Curia were damaged.”
In addition, minor damage was recorded to the facade of the Patriarchal Cathedral. Many drone debris of various sizes were collected on its territory.
“Instead of gifts from St Nicholas, we will have these original souvenirs,” said Sviatoslav Shevchuk, Major Archbishop of the UGCC.
Background:
- The Russians launched a record number of attack UAVs at Ukraine on the night of 24-25 November. There were 75 Shahed kamikaze drones, 74 of which were shot down.
- Five people were injured as the result of the attack on Kyiv, including an 11-year-old child. Falling debris caused damage in two districts of the city.
