Details: Danko and Lavrov addressed “prospects for bilateral cooperation” and had a “engaging exchange of views on current issues on the international agenda” during their meeting.
The Russian Foreign Ministry reported that Lavrov “explained” the causes for the “conflict” in Ukraine and, as usual, blamed the West for “arming the Kyiv regime”.
Background:
- On 12 January, a group of far-right Slovak MPs, led by Andrej Danko, Deputy Speaker and leader of the nationalist Slovak National Party, departed for Russia on a visit set to last several days. They intended to discuss the continuation of Russian gas deliveries after transit through Ukraine became impossible.
- Announcing the trip to Russia, Danko said he would “consider it an honour” to be able to speak at the State Duma of the Russian Federation.
- The Slovak MPs’ trip follows a controversial visit to Moscow by Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, who met with Russian leader Vladimir Putin.
