Ten European Union member states have proposed to tighten sanctions against Russia’s energy sector, in particular liquefied natural gas, and institutions that help Moscow circumvent existing sanctions.

Details: The new package of sanctions against Russia, proposed by the Baltic States, Denmark, Ireland, Poland, Romania, Sweden, Czechia and Finland, includes new and tighter restrictions.

First of all, it concerns Russia’s energy sector – in particular, a ban on imports of Russian gas and liquefied natural gas or a gradual reduction in its consumption, PAP writes.

The EU member states also call for tougher sanctions against Russia’s “shadow fleet” and the EU’s gradual abandonment of Russia’s nuclear energy, the article says.

The document quoted by the agency calls for further trade sanctions against Russia, including sanctions on imports of Russian metals, as already reported in the media.

The EU, according to the document’s signatories, should also impose sanctions on third-country financial institutions that circumvent sanctions by allowing, for example, financial transfers related to the transit of banned goods to Russia or using cryptocurrencies to circumvent restrictions, PAP notes.

Background:

  • On 16 December, the Council of the European Union adopted the 15th package of economic and individual restrictive measures, which included North Korean officials and Chinese suppliers of drone kits.
  • In early 2025, the EU is due to begin discussions on the 16th package of sanctions, which will coincide with the Polish presidency of the Council of the European Union.
