Tropical Cyclone Talim: Hong Kong may hoist T8 storm signal early Monday, as rain expected all week

The T3 storm signal and “very hot” warning remained in force on Sunday as Tropical Cyclone Talim closed in on the city.
It is expected to be closest to Hong Kong on Monday morning, skirting within around 300 kilometres south of the territory.
“Depending on the changes in Talim’s intensity and the distance between the associated gales and the Pearl River Estuary, the Observatory will assess the need of issuing the Gale or Storm Signal No. 8 midnight to tomorrow morning,” the Observatory website said on Sunday. “Local winds will change from northeasterlies to east to southeasterlies.”
The storm will depart from the coast of Guangdong, but wet weather is expected to continue into next week”, towards the weekend: “[U]nder the influence of the broad trough of low pressure over the central and northern parts of the South China Sea, there will still be showers over the coast of Guangdong. An anticyclone aloft will strengthen towards the weekend, the weather will improve slightly over Guangdong,” the Observatory said.
The T3 signal was hoisted at 5:40am on Sunday.

The No. 3 signal warns of strong winds affecting, or expected to affect, Hong Kong within 12 hours.
- Classes of kindergartens and schools for children with physical or intellectual disabilities will be suspended.
- Scheduled ferry services may be cancelled as conditions worsen. Bus and MTR services are not affected.
- Residents should secure loose objects like flower pots or drying racks, and prepare for possible flooding in low-lying areas.
