t1 typhoon

The Hong Kong Observatory will hoist the T1 storm signal on Thursday night, as Tropical Cyclone Trami closes in. It will assess the need for issuing the Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 on Friday or early on Saturday.

“According to the present forecast, Tropical Cyclone Trami will enter within 800 kilometres of Hong Kong tonight (24 October) to tomorrow morning (25 October). The Observatory will issue the Standby Signal, No. 1 between 10 p.m. tonight and 4 a.m. tomorrow morning. Trami is expected to move towards the vicinity of Hainan Island gradually,” the Observatory said.

It is unclear if the cyclone will linger around Hainan Island in China, or move eastwards across the central and northern parts of the South China Sea again early next week.

The observatory said it will be windy and cloudy, with a few showers over the coast of southern China, this weekend.

Rain will persist into the middle of next week, with brighter spells towards next weekend. Temperatures are set to dip overnight to lows of 21 degrees Celsius over the coming 10 days.

Typhoon Signal 1

The No.1 signal is the “Standby” signal. It is issued when a tropical cyclone is centred within about 800 kilometres of Hong Kong and may affect the territory.

  • All schools and government services remain open.
  • All public transport remains in service.
  • The government advice is to take the tropical cyclone into account when planning activities and be wary of potential strong winds over offshore waters.

Climate crisis

Tropical cyclones – which get their energy from warm ocean water – are strengthening and become ever more destructive because of warming seas. Over 90 per cent of excess heat in the atmosphere is ending up in oceans, according to NASA, as rising greenhouse gases prevent it from escaping to space.
