Quote: “I’m asking companies not to let TikTok stay dark! I will issue an executive order on Monday to extend the period of time before the law’s prohibitions take effect, so that we can make a deal to protect our national security. The order will also confirm that there will be no liability for any company that helped keep TikTok from going dark before my order.”
Details: Trump proposed that the US take a 50% ownership in a joint venture, which he believes will secure TikTok’s future, ensure acceptable management, and assist its growth.
He stressed that TikTok’s success hinges upon US approval, stating that with such an agreement, the platform could be worth hundreds of billions, if not trillions of dollars. Trump’s plan entails forming a joint venture with existing or new stakeholders, with the US holding a substantial share.
Background:
- TikTok became unavailable in the United States on 18 January as a result of a nearly a year-old rule that required the platform to break away from its Chinese owner or face a ban.
- Trump has taken a more positive posture towards TikTok, recently stating that he sees no need to abandon the platform and even highlighting his impressive reach metrics.
- Trump’s nominee for national security advisor, Mike Waltz, has claimed that the president-elect will find a way to keep TikTok available in the United States.
