Typhoon Koinu: Hong Kong to see storm signal 1 on Wed night as city braces for wet weekend
Hong Kong Free Press
The Observatory expects to raise the T1 standby storm signal on Wednesday night, with Tropical Cyclone Koinu set to bring wind and rain to the region this weekend.
“Koinu is expected to edge closer to the eastern coast of Guangdong. It may then move westwards along the coast of Guangdong and its adjacent waters, and weaken gradually under the influence of the northeast monsoon,” the Observatory said on Monday. “However, Koinu’s impact on the local weather will depend on how fast it weakens and its distance from the Pearl River Estuary.”
As of noon, Tuesday, the storm was located 520 kilometres east-southeast of Kaohsiung in Taiwan.
As Koinu heads west, it will be extremely hot in the coming days, the Observatory added. Temperatures of up to 35 degrees Celsius are predicted for Wednesday.
It will remain unsettled into next week, under the influence of the northeast monsoon.
Typhoon Signal 1
The No.1 signal is the “Standby” signal. It is issued when a tropical cyclone is centred within about 800 kilometres of Hong Kong and may affect the territory.
- All schools and government services remain open.
- All public transport remains in service.
- The government advice is to take the tropical cyclone into account when planning activities and be wary of potential strong winds over offshore waters.
