Details: The UK sanctions concern the Social Design Agency (SDA), which, as an international journalistic investigation has shown, receives money from the Kremlin and promotes its propaganda in the West.
The Struktura group of companies associated with SDA, the autonomous non-profit organisation Dialog, and their leaders have also been subject to restrictions: Ilya Gambashidze, Nikolai Tupikin and Andrei Perla.
According to the UK government, the sanctioned individuals are involved in a Russian disinformation operation called Doppelganger, which uses clones of real websites and social media pages as reliable sources of information.
“Despite Russian pouring money into these malign organisations’ interference activities, their lies have consistently struggled online, with bots and fake sites getting limited interaction,” the statement said.
Background:
- In early September, the United States also imposed sanctions on the Kremlin’s disinformation network, which included the Dialog NGO and its subsidiary, Dialog Regions.
- The US Treasury Department also announced so-called blocking sanctions against the Russian media group Rossiya Segodnya and its CEO Dmitry Kiselev.
