UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak believes that Russia tried to disrupt the Global Peace Summit in Switzerland because it felt threatened by discussions of the fundamental principles of international law.

Details: The UK prime minister stated that Russia, unlike the summit attendees, is not interested in genuine peace, and Putin “has initiated a long diplomatic campaign against this summit, ordering that countries not come”.

“We should wonder why Russia feels so threatened by a summit that discusses the fundamental principles of territorial integrity, food and nuclear security,” he added.

Sunak recalled remarks from the Russian UN representative, who said that the only topic for any international meeting on Ukraine would be “the unconditional surrender of the Kyiv regime”.

“Well, this will never happen. Because aggression cannot and should not prevail,” the UK prime minister stated.

Background:

  • At the summit, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said it was Russia that was refusing to peacefully resolve the war in Ukraine that it had unleashed.
  • Meanwhile, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is hopeful that a plan to achieve a just peace in Ukraine will be agreed upon at the next Peace Summit, which will allow “to ensure the real end of the war”.
