Ukraine’s gas transmission system is ready to operate in reverse after the contract for the transit of Russian gas to Europe is terminated at the end of this year.

Details: Naftogaz, Ukraine’s state-owned oil and gas company, has stressed that gas supplies to Ukrainian consumers will be maintained, even in the absence of Russian gas transit through the country.

As for potential gas supplies from Azerbaijan in 2025, the source indicated that the government has not yet received any formal proposals from European companies.

Under the Association Agreement with the EU, Ukraine is obliged to facilitate gas transit if requested by European partners. Meanwhile, Hungary and Slovakia face no sanctions preventing them from purchasing Russian pipeline gas.

An example of such cooperation is the Hungarian company MOL, which purchases Russian oil at the Belarusian border and transports it via the Ukrainian oil pipeline.

For reference: Reverse flow refers to the process of transporting gas in the opposite direction to its usual route. In Ukraine’s case, this means gas can be imported from European countries, such as Poland, Slovakia, or Hungary, rather than from the east (Russia). Essentially, instead of exporting Russian gas through Ukraine to Europe, Ukraine can receive gas supplies from European markets.

Background: Austrian energy company Wien Energie GmbH, which provides energy to two million people in Vienna and its suburbs, announced it would cease using Russian fuel for the first time in decades, beginning in 2025.
