Quote: “According to information received from the Border Police of the Slovak Republic, the Union of Road Hauliers of Slovakia (UNAS) plans to block the movement of trucks in front of the Vyšné Nemecké checkpoint, adjacent to the Ukrainian Uzhorod checkpoint, from 16:00 on 1 December 2023.

It is noted that the transportation of humanitarian aid and military aid, live animals, fuel and chilled goods will not be obstructed. Limited quantities of other freight departing Slovakia will be let through at a rate of four trucks per hour.

In light of the aforementioned, please consider the potential difficulties associated with vehicle traffic in front of the Uzhhorod checkpoint.”

Details: The Ukrainian border guards said the Slovak side had provided no further information on when the protest would be over.

The situation will be monitored by Ukrainian border guards, who will be in constant contact with their Slovak counterparts regarding truck traffic and the types of goods that can still cross the border and enter Slovakia.

The State Border Guard Service of Ukraine will update its information pages in the event of any changes.

Background:

  • This month, UNAS representatives blocked the Vyšné Nemecké border crossing point from the Slovak side for an hour in solidarity with the Polish protesters.
  • They are demanding that Brussels reintroduce commercial permits for Ukrainian hauliers, as European companies cannot compete with them – the same demand as the Polish protesters.
  • The Polish truck drivers began their protest on 6 November, demanding that the EU reinstate the permit system for Ukrainian drivers entering the European Union and for EU drivers entering Ukraine, with the exception of humanitarian aid and military supplies.
