Ukraine’s Commander-in-Chief: State secrets were not discussed in office

Valerii Zaluzhnyi, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, does not consider the detection of bugging devices in his office to be putting any pressure on him, and he does not think that state secrets could have been discussed in that office.

Details: Responding to a question whether he considered the detection of bugging devices in his office a gesture of pressure, he said: “No, (I interpret is as) the war. The investigation will show what it could be”.

Zaluzhnyi revealed that he had to enter the office where a bugging device was found at 7:00.

Quote: “I don’t think so [that state secrets could have been discussed in the office – ed.]. This room was used earlier, but there was a long pause so it happened right before my meeting”.

Background:

  • On 17 December, Ukrainska Pravda sources reported that bugging devices had been found in the offices of Valerii Zaluzhnyi and some of his staff. The rooms were supposed to be the new office of the Commander-in-Chief, which was being checked before the move.
  • The Security Service of Ukraine stated that a technical device, which was not in working order, had been found in one of the potential locations for Valerii Zaluzhnyi’s office. Law enforcement officers opened a criminal investigation.
