Details: The Ukrainian defence minister said he had spoken with US officials in Washington about lifting restrictions on Ukraine’s use of long-range weapons to strike deep into Russian territory.
“We have explained what kind of capabilities we need to protect the citizens against the Russian terror that Russians are causing us, so I hope we were heard,” he said.
Umierov noted that the US had been provided with a list of targets that Kyiv seeks to hit with ATACMS missiles, a move that had been announced by American media a few days earlier.
“We are showing that the airfields that they are using to hit our cities are within the range of deep strikes,” the minister added.
He stressed that Ukraine will continue to insist on lifting the restrictions in order to protect Ukrainian civilians and infrastructure.
“They [the Russians] are killing our citizens. That’s why we want to deter them, we want to stop them, we don’t want [to] allow their aviation to come closer to our borders to bomb the cities,” Umerov explained.
Background:
- Earlier, the Washington Post reported that, amid operations in Kursk Oblast, Ukraine has intensified its request to the Biden administration for authorisation to use ATACMS missiles against military airfields in Russia.
- The official US stance has not yet changed, though the European Union has decided that the relevant decision should be made at the national level.
