Ukraine’s Foreign Minister comments on Hungary’s threats to block Ukraine’s EU accession

Dmytro Kuleba, Ukraine’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, states that at the moment, Hungary’s stance on blocking Ukraine’s EU accession due to the issue of national minorities does not affect possible start of negotiations about Ukraine’s EU accession in December this year.

Details: The minister stated that “it is no secret that the issue of national minorities is being brought up by Hungary out of principle and in Hungarian vision”.
Quote: “But let’s solve the problems as they arise. I am once again reminding you that the decision by the European Commission concerning the negotiations about Ukraine’s EU accession will be made in December.
Every EU member state will try to use the situation with further EU expansion for its own gain in one way or another.”
Background:
- Balázs Orbán, Political Director of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, stated that Budapest will block the start of negotiations with Ukraine about its EU accession until Hungarian demands about the language of education of Hungarians in Ukraine are met.
- Olha Stefanishyna, Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration of Ukraine, believes that political claims by Budapest about “blocking the accession” of Ukraine to the EU “will not hinder real work” on the issue of the language of education of the Hungarian minority in Ukraine.
- Bloomberg said that the European Commission will most likely recommend the EU member states to start official negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the European Union after fulfilling all seven criteria.
