Details: The accident took place on Friday, 3 January, at approximately 17:00, when a minibus driver struck the boy at a pedestrian crossing and fled the scene.
A service member who witnessed the accident provided first aid to the teenager at the scene. The boy was rushed to hospital but was dead on arrival.
The Warsaw District Prosecutor’s Office reported on 6 January that the deceased was a 14-year-old Ukrainian.
“The deceased is a citizen of Ukraine. The perpetrator is a Polish citizen. After the crime, the suspect hid the minibus on the outskirts of Warsaw. There, he was consuming alcohol with a family member,” said Piotr Skiba, a spokesman for the District Prosecutor’s Office in Warsaw, at a press conference.
When a Radio Liberty reporter inquired whether the deceased was a Ukrainian with temporary protection status, the spokesperson replied that this would be established the following day after investigators spoke with the victim’s mother.
The 43-year-old driver, Andrzej K., was detained on Saturday, 4 January, a day after the accident, while under the influence of alcohol. He works for a courier service. The prosecutor’s office noted that he has a criminal record, including previous charges for drug possession and aiding illegal border crossings.
The driver faces charges under two articles: causing a fatal accident and fleeing the scene. If convicted, he will face a prison sentence ranging from 5 to 20 years.
