The New York Times has included Mariana and Taras Prokhasko’s book Who Will Make the Snow? in its rating of the best books for children and teenagers in 2023.

Source: The New York Times published a selection of 18 children’s books

Quote: “Originally published in Ukraine, this sweet, strange, lightly philosophical book, illustrated with soft, scribbly drawings, features newborn twin moles who live in a whimsically imagined woodland community. The title comes from the moles’ belief that when they die they will rise to the clouds and make the snow for those left behind.”

Details: Who Will Make the Snow? is Mariana and Taras Prokhasko’s first book for children. For Mariana Prokhasko, it was also her first experience as an illustrator.

The New York Times rating included the English edition of the book, which was translated into English by Borys Draliuk and Jennifer Croft of Elsewhere Editions. The original book was published by Staryi Lev Publishing House, which has congratulated the authors.

“Congratulations to Mariana Prokhasko and Taras Prokhasko, and we are thrilled with this good news!” the publishing house emphasised.

Who Will Make the Snow? won several awards in Ukraine. In particular, the book became the winner of the BBC Book of the Year in 2013 competition in the BBC Children’s Book of the Year – 2013 category, also received the LitAccent of the Year 2013 award in the Poetry and Prose for Children category and took first place in the Book of the Year – 2013 rating in the Children’s holiday nomination.

Speaking about the world’s achievements, Who Will Make the Snow? was included in the world catalogue of The White Ravens of the International Youth Library in 2014.
