Pravda Ukraine

Ukrainian chess player Anastasiia Osadchuk has won the FIDE World Amateur Chess Championship in the Women u1700 category.

Osadchuk scored 8 points after 9 rounds and was a point ahead of Mongolia’s Bayart-Uchral Anu.

The tournament was held in the Greek city of Rhodes using the Swiss system (each team plays with an opponent who has the same number of wins and losses).

Dmytro Nikolaienko, another Ukrainian chess player, also took seventh place in the Open u1700 tournament.

Background:

  • Earlier, Norwegian grandmaster Magnus Carlsen, after receiving the FIDE 100 GOAT Award, called for Russians not to be allowed to return to international competitions. After that, the Vice President of the Russian Chess Federation (RCF) Sergei Smagin said that Carlsen should return all the money he won in Russia.
  • On 7 June 2024, the International Chess Federation (FIDE) suspended the Russian Chess Federation from membership for two years. However, a meeting of the FIDE General Assembly was scheduled for 22 September in the Hungarian capital Budapest, where the possible restoration of the rights of the Russian and Belarusian chess federations was considered.
