The Office of the President of Ukraine hopes to obtain permission from the US government to use American weapons for hitting targets deep in Russia, and not only in border areas, in the near future.
Source: Ihor Zhovkva, Deputy Head of the Office of the President, in an interview with Voice of America, as reported by European Pravda
Details: Zhovkva stated that work on this subject began well before the NATO meeting, and that considerable progress has been made since then
Quote: “We are working with the United States at many levels, including the Department of Defense, the National Security Council, and the White House, and we hope that a decision will be made soon. We need it. But let’s avoid speculating in the press about this crucial decision. The Ukrainian leadership is working on this, and we will get the job done.
All previous critical decisions made by the United States were done quietly, and this time will be no exception.”
Zhovkva noted that the parties have clearly reached a consensus.
When asked about the Ukrainian side’s claims, he stated that Ukraine emphasises the necessity to defend itself against missile attacks from certain known locations.
To a clarifying question on whether he feels a solution can be reached, Zhovkva responded that progress “will one day come to being, just as it was in the past on other issues that we discussed with the administration.”
Background: David Lammy, the UK Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, said that the UK continues to assess Ukraine’s request to deploy British-supplied Storm Shadow cruise missiles to strike military targets in Russia.
