UN Secretary General condemns Russia’s missile strike on Ukraine “in strongest terms”

UN Secretary-General António Guterres condemned Russia’s large-scale night attacks on Ukrainian cities, civilians and critical infrastructure.

Quote: “The Secretary-General condemns in the strongest terms the large-scale attack of the Russian Federation on Ukrainian cities and settlements throughout the country, including civilian objects and critical infrastructure.”
Details: Guterres also focused on the death and injury of a large number of civilians.
Earlier: The United States accused Russia of purposefully distracting the UN Security Council with topics about the Revolution of Dignity in Ukraine a decade ago, while Moscow was preparing the largest missile and air strike on Ukrainian cities.
Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the UN Serhii Kyslytsya informed the Security Council about the consequences of Russia’s massive attack on Ukraine, noting that Russia feels free by killing “innocent people in Ukraine and abroad.”
Background:
- On the night of 28-29 December, Russia launched a large-scale attack on Ukraine. Kyiv, Kharkiv, Dnipro, Odesa, Lviv, Zaporizhzhia and other cities were hit.
- In the end, out of the 158 air targets the Russians launched towards Ukraine, 114 were destroyed by air defence. The Russian Federation, according to the Air Force, employed nearly every kind of weaponry at its disposal.
- The President’s Office previously reported 26 dead, more than 120 wounded.
- As of 19:30, it was reported that the Russian massive strike on 29 December resulted in approximately 30 deaths and over 160 injured, according to Ihor Klymenko, Ukraine’s Minister of Internal Affairs.
