Details: Miller declined to provide further information about the threat that led to the embassy in Kyiv suspending operations, stating only that it was “something we are following closely” and that the State Department “takes the safety of its personnel extremely seriously”.

The spokesman added that the US expected to resume normal operations of the embassy the following day.

He refused to say whether the threat envisaged by the US security services had come to pass, only noting that “Ukraine has been subjected to extremely large-scale air strikes in recent days”.

Miller also stressed that no one from the US Embassy in Kyiv had left Ukraine.

Background:

  • The United States urged its citizens in Ukraine to exercise maximum caution due to the risk of a major aerial attack by Russia. On 20 November, the US Embassy switched to remote work.
  • Spain, Greece and Italy followed the US in closing their embassies for security reasons.
  • Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the shift to remote work by the US Embassy and some other foreign diplomatic missions in Ukraine as an “information overreaction”.
