Details: Kirby stated that the US “did change the guidance” on the use of ATACMS missiles, allowing Ukrainians to “use them to strike these particular types of targets”.
Quote from Kirby: “Right now, they are able to use ATACMS to defend themselves in an immediate-need basis. And right now, understandably, that’s taken place in around Kursk, in the Kursk Oblast.”
Details: Kirby indicated that he would “let the Ukrainians speak to their use of ATACMS, and their targeting procedures, and what they’re using them for, and how well they’re doing”.
Kirby’s comments marked the first official confirmation that Ukraine had been authorised to use US long-range weapons against Russia. The first reported use of ATACMS in Russia’s Bryansk Oblast was made unofficially last week.
Following this, Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin threatened Western powers that allowed Kyiv to strike Russia with their weapons, warning of retaliatory strikes.
