Zelenskyy meets German defence minister in Kyiv

On Tuesday, 14 January, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius in Kyiv.

Details: Zelenskyy and Pistorius discussed the development of a comprehensive air defence shield, investments in the Ukrainian defence industry, strengthening Ukraine’s defence capabilities, as well as training and support for Ukrainian soldiers on the battlefield.
Quote: “I am grateful to Germany for its unwavering support, which has not only strengthened Ukraine’s defence but also played a crucial role in enhancing Europe’s security as a whole. Germany has made one of the largest contributions to protecting Ukraine’s skies and saving countless lives, providing approximately 16% of all the aid Ukraine has received,” Zelenskyy said.
They also spoke about coordination with partners to achieve a just peace and highlighted the results of yesterday’s Group of Five meeting, which brought together the defense ministers of Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, and Poland.
Background:
- Boris Pistorius arrived in Kyiv on an unannounced visit on the morning of 14 January.
- Before that, he held talks in Warsaw with his counterparts from Poland, France, Italy and the United Kingdom on further assistance to Kyiv.
- Pistorius handed over the first RCH 155 wheeled howitzer to Ukrainian defenders as part of the reinforcement of Ukrainian artillery, with Germany promising to provide 54 pieces in total.
