Zelenskyy meets with new Prime Minister of Luxembourg

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, as part of his visit to Davos, held a meeting with Luxembourg Prime Minister Luc Frieden, who assumed office in November.

Zelenskyy noted that he thanked Frieden for Luxembourg’s support, including on Ukraine’s path to the EU, and for allocating EUR 50 billion to Ukraine.

Quote: “I informed [Frieden] about the battlefield situation and Ukraine’s [primary] defence needs. We discussed continued cooperation, including financial assistance for Ukraine, the seizure of frozen Russian assets, and the Peace Formula,” the president said.

Zelenskyy and Frieden noted the successful holding of the fourth meeting of advisers on the Peace Formula in Davos. The Ukrainian president invited Luxembourg to contribute to preparing for the Global Peace Summit.

  • Luxembourg was among the states that advocated the start of negotiations on Ukraine’s membership in the European Union.
  • In August 2023, Luxembourg joined the G7 declaration on security guarantees for Ukraine.
  • The previous prime minister of Luxembourg, Xavier Bettel, visited Ukraine on a solidarity visit during the full-scale invasion of Russia.
  • In June 2022, President Zelenskyy stated that Luxembourg allocated 15% of its defence budget to Ukrainian defenders.
