Zelenskyy says four Ukrainian sailors are in Houthi captivity

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said that four Ukrainian sailors are being held captive by Yemeni Houthis, and Ukraine will work to bring them back.

Quote from Zelenskyy: “The situation in the Red Sea is also very important for us because it has affected the safety of Ukrainian citizens. Four of our sailors are currently being held captive by the Houthis.”

Details: The president promised that Ukraine would work to release its citizens from captivity.

Background:

  • On the night of 11-12 January, the United States, in coordination with the United Kingdom and with the support of Australia, Canada, the Netherlands and Bahrain, conducted joint strikes on Houthi targets in Yemen.
  • The UK reported that four of its RAF Typhoon FGR4 fighter jets, supported by a Voyager refuelling aircraft, used Paveway IV guided bombs to strike two Houthi targets.
  • The Netherlands said it provided technical support during the operation.
  • This comes after the Houthis launched their most massive missile and drone attack on ships in the Red Sea on Tuesday.
