Zelenskyy: We are closer to end of war than we think

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said that Russia’s war against Ukraine is “closer to the end” than many people think and called on allies to strengthen Ukrainian forces.

Details: ABC News noted that Zelenskyy had repeatedly called on the United States and the United Kingdom to lift restrictions on the use of long-range missiles, which they have provided to Ukraine to hit targets deep in Russia.
At the same time, Russian leader Vladimir Putin claimed that the use of Western-supplied weapons to strike Russian targets would be seen as a serious escalation of the war and a direct challenge from NATO.
Zelenskyy’s request comes amid fierce fighting in Ukraine’s east and a few weeks after the start of Ukraine’s operation in Russia’s Kursk Oblast.
In an interview with ABC News, Zelenskyy said that Putin was “afraid” of the Kursk operation.
Quote from Zelenskyy: “It’s true. He’s afraid very much. Why? Because his people saw that he can’t defend – that he can’t defend all his territory.”
Details: Zelenskyy added that Ukraine could “push Putin to stop the war” only by having a “strong position”.

- Zelenskyy is expected to present a detailed version of the plan to Biden during their meeting in Washington on 26 September.

- On the eve of his visit to the US, Zelenskyy said that the possibility of US President Joe Biden not supporting Ukraine’s Victory Plan was “a horrible thought“, because that would lead to a very long war with a huge number of casualties.
