Zelenskyy’s Office hopes to complete security agreement with US in May

The Office of the President of Ukraine has reported “tangible progress” in the work of Ukraine and the United States on a bilateral security agreement to follow up on the G7 declaration on security guarantees. The parties hope to agree on the final text in May.

Details: The press service said that Kyiv and Washington had held the fourth round of talks on a future security agreement. 

They discussed the “most fundamental provisions” and the wording of several issues. They also set a date for the next round of talks but did not name it.

“I am grateful to the negotiating teams for the job they have already done – there has been tangible progress in agreeing on the text of the document. We need to speed up the process to finalise the bilateral security agreement this month,” said Andrii Yermak, Head of the Office of the President.

  • In early May, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that Ukraine was preparing seven new bilateral security agreements, including with the United States. 
  • So far, Ukraine has signed bilateral security agreements with nine countries, the latest being Latvia. Negotiations have already been completed for an agreement with Norway, which is also expected to be signed.
